I first saw Stephen’s ‘Harbor Seals’ fine art print while attending his Masterful Fine Art Digital Printing Hands-on Workshop in early December.  As I looked at the image I knew that I needed to have the print. The image invokes happy memories of sea life that my family and I have experienced over the years. The complimentary colors - the seals, sand and seaweed with shades of red and magenta juxtaposed against the wash of waves with shades of blues and cyan - make the image a visual delight.  Stephen’s handling of contrast against captured light gives the image a 3-dimensional look. The paper used has a wonderful visual texture and a nice tactile feel; and, is supportive of the very fine details present within the image.  This is my first Stephen Johnson print, I suspect it won’t be my last.

Stephen Johnson’s fine art print of “Harbor Seals” is an outstanding example of Stephen’s approach and mastery of landscape photography.  He captures the essence of a scene, the light and the feel of the environment. Several years ago I became acquainted with his stunning landscape his photography.  Recently, I had the opportunity to participate in one of his field workshops and experienced just how honestly and sincerely he approaches his art.  Nothing is faked. He strives to reproduce the emotional response that attracted him to the scene in the first place.  During his workshop, he carried out that process with our diverse group of photographers with various levels of experience; describing his concepts of the art, providing examples, addressing our individual concerns and coaching each of us individually in the field.  With considerably more experience and effort, I hope to be able to achieve similar results.  Stephen’s photographs, like “Harbor Seals”, are an inspiration.
