Canon Explorer of Light Photographer Stephen Johnson will present his historic With a New Eye: The Digital National Parks Project photographs of America’s national parks in breathtaking detail and subtlety with a digital 4x5 camera. A selection of original prints will be on display.

Stephen Johnson has been teaching and working in photography since 1977 as a photographer, teacher, and designer. His books include At Mono Lake (which was also a National Endowment for the Arts funded exhibition), the critically acclaimed The Great Central Valley: California’s Heartland, and Making a Digital Book. Published in 2006, Stephen Johnson on Digital Photography has received accolades far and wide. Stephen has taught both traditional and digital photography at the college level and has lectured at numerous seminars and conferences in the US and Europe, and on January 19, he’ll speak about his groundbreaking work made in American’s national parks at The Image Flow on Thursday March 2.

The focus of Stephen’s photography explores issues faced by the landscape artist working in an increasingly industrialized world.  And his overall level of involvement in the development of the tools of his trade is equally as impressive: Stephen is in the singular position of shooting with a camera he had extensive influence in designing, editing with software he helped to expand and customize, and printing on printers he helped design.

He also works to devise and refine new tools for digital photography and teaching other artists to use these tools to express their ideas. He was recognized by Apple Computer in 1997 with a ColorSync Profiling Excellence Award. In 1999, Folio Magazine declared the publication of Johnson’s digital photographs in Life magazine to be one of the Top 15 Critical Events in magazine publishing in the twentieth century. In 2003, he was inducted into the Photoshop Hall of Fame, and in 2006, Canon named Stephen one of their Explorers of Light; Canon sponsors speaking engagements with him around the country. In 2007, Stephen became a founding member of X-Rite’s exclusive Coloratti group of photographers and educators honored for their skills in color management.

He has worked on the software and product development side of digital photography for clients such as Apple, Eastman Kodak, Epson, Foveon, HP, Leaf, Radius, Ricoh, and SuperMac. He also worked with Adobe to create the duotone curves for Photoshop.

Stephen’s photographs have been widely published and collected internationally and are part of the permanent collections of the Oakland Museum, the Getty, the National Park Service, and the Packard Foundation, among others. His work has been featured in Life and dozens of other magazines and in television specials including features on ABC News/Discovery Channel, PBS, internet TV and many local stations. Past clients include the Ansel Adams Publishing Trust and the Friends of Photography.

Stephen is currently working on several projects including With a New Eye, an all digital national parks photographic project and Exquisite Earth, a collection of recent work around the planet.

Stephen will also be teaching a workshop through The Image Flow at Pt. Reyes this spring—details forthcoming! Learn more about Stephen on his website.
