These issues are covered with a clarity and in a context so that their purpose and problem causing potential is understood and able to be applied to a photographer's workflow immediately.

Marion Patterson’s Intimate Landscapes exhibition Opening Reception

I’m not sure when Marion and I first met, but we agree it was a long time ago. We had been friends for years when she invited me to apply to teach with her at Foothill College for a full-time photography instructor position. Although after a year into my time there, I came to the conclusion I did not want the job, Marion and I have remained friends for decades. I’ve always admired the directness and sensitivity of her photographs. Marion’s photographs were among the first I thought of when I decided to start my Guest Photographer Series.

Hundreds of students and thousands of visitors later, we are celebrating those 20 years this December.

January 7 is the deadline to register for this class.

Since 1979 I have led winter photography workshops to Death Valley. I keep returning to this desert because there is a magic here, a quiet and vast expanse of sensual and strange earthworks, remarkable in color, resting under the soft winter light of January.

We will spend our first half day preparing for our outings. Topics covered will be optimal digital camera use in a variety of formats, file size and printing considerations. We will open files, review success, constantly going back in the field putting into practice lessons learned.

Yosemite Valley in Winter Field Photography Class

Winter in Yosemite Valley is a transformed world. Trees are wet and dark, the oaks are bare. The cliffs are blanketed with snow. Weather moves through in waves of clouds and mist. Ponds and river edges are frozen. There is usually snow on the valley floor. Visitors are dramatically fewer in number. Our three days together will likely be cold, but we will no doubt be warmed by the special beauty that winter brings to this grand valley. Although we will carpool to various locations, I hope our basic mode of transportation through the valley will be our feet. There is really no other way to come to know a place.

How do we work toward understanding our momentary visual curiosities and turn them into strong photographs? Why do we point the camera in one direction instead of another when the subject matter might be very similar? Why does a photographer take so long to make a photograph? What constitutes a beautiful print?

Color: Emotion, Management, Editing and Printing

Our color perception of the world is a pervasive influence on our hearts, and our understanding of space and time. Making color photographs can build on those influences or merely record by habit and defaults. Controlling color after the fact can be a real technological challenge. This seminar explores the color we see, the way we record it, and the challenges of displaying, controlling and reproducing it.

Discussions will include making a photograph where color matters, interpreting that color from a Raw capture, fine-tuning that interpretation, building custom camera profiles (and editing them) plus building a color managed workflow from capture to printing.

Virtual Seminar: HDR Kinder & Gentler

The limitations of digital and film-based photography to capture the extreme highlights and shadows of a scene has been part of the opportunity of the traditional Zone System with film, and heavy tonal adjustments in digital interpretations. But with the ability to accurately combine very different exposures, HDR opens up a whole new world of holding a scene with a camera much more akin to the versatility of our eyes. Join me for this exploration of High Dynamic Range photography from exposure, to integration, and processing. HDR does not have to mean weird extraterrestrial looking photographs, it can be a beautiful melding of technology and technique that makes our photographs much more like our real world experience.
