Upcoming Workshop:
Welcome to the July 2019 Edition of the Stephen Johnson Photography Newsletter.
I often get so involved in the projects I’m doing that it seems the current one is all I’ve been up to. I have been so busy preparing publications for our Landing Party Celebration of Apollo 11’s Landing on the Moon 50 years ago, that I forget much of the other stuff that’s happened this past month. Again, my monthly Newsletter keeps me aware of the real life I am living…
— Steve
ps: the current Newsfeed tells the story of a kitten in our wall. It’s not about photography but it is a good story.
This month's View From Here column collects photographs and stories from the last month and offers new products related to the anniversary of the landing of Apollo 11 on the moon. We hope you find the column interesting and will consider sending us some comments.
Check out the workshops we’ve added, including our summer sale on Masterful Fine-Art Printing class.

These Newsletters are often the best perspective creating process I have. Sitting down to reflect on the last 30 days has taken on an important role for me in understanding my career and life chronology. The forced selection of that process reminds me of photographs made, ideas pondered, and connections realized. Writing from life experiences has worked well for me, and is something I frequently encourage. For me, writing helps allow all of the self-doubt to be confronted by the reality of my curiosity always pushing me forward.
This past month I have been immersed in fulfilling some print orders and preparing some publications relating to the Apollo 11 anniversary /50 Years of Space photography. New books/portfolios include the 50 Years of Space Photography exhibit catalog, an Apollo 11 Collectors Portfolio boxed-set of prints and the 94 page Apollo 11 Photography book. Of course, now I have to put some real work into preparing for our Apollo 11 Landing Party celebration on July 20.
The June Flora and Form Workshop
Our June session of the Flora and Form Workshop at the local Shelldance Orchid Gardens nursery, brought a good time, beautiful light and some new photographs. It always feels like such a privilege to bring people to this wonderful nursery and have the leisure to explore, with tripod, with no rush. The time enables a consideration of subject and application of craft that is rare for this kind of environment.
In a place I’ve visited so often, I didn’t expect to make any new photographs that would stay with me. I did make some mistakes, but am pleased with many of the new photographs.
Surrealistic Summer Solstice in Golden Gate Park 3
We attended this years redo of the Summer of Love outdoor concert in Golden Gate Park. Although a little cold (it is after all, summer in San Francisco) we had a good time listening to the music and people watching.

A Walk in the Woods
San Pedro Valley Park
We recently took a walk up the Hazelnut Trail of our local San Pedro Valley Park at the back of the valley near my studio. Many old familiar views still get my attention and there always seems to be different light and new ways of seeing them.

Around the Studio
A Solstice Delight
Pulling into the studio last week on the Solstice, a beautiful butterfly was dancing among the wildflowers in front on my usual parking space. I was delighted, grabbed my camera and followed him for a few minutes. A few days later, the fields were mowed, and all of the wildflowers gone.
In the Galleries
The new space exhibition has been getting some nice attention. It is being shown in conjunction with my current show or original photographs “Life Form.” The joint exhibition is called "Other Worldly.”
The upcoming Fine Art Printing and Special Projects in Printing, both in July, Mono Lakein October and Joshua Tree in November are open for enrollment now. Enroll while there is time and space!.
Popup Poppies
A small outcropping of California Poppies founds its way into a crack in the concrete in front on my Studio door. Small blessings that we need to take in.
I’ve always been drawn to historical photographs and maps. I’ve been collecting 19th century books, engravings and now making scans of photos and maps. Printed on just the right paper and sheen, the reproductions are often vey special in their own right. So I’ve decided to make some of these prints available as I print them and discover more.
The first few are from the San Francisco Bay Area, local to my home in Pacifica, We’ll make them both available as 8x10 ($35-$45) and 11x14 ($75-$85) with larger sizes available for quote. The Gallery of current offerings where you can place orders can be found here.
Current Exhibition
Life Form opened in the Main Gallery at Stephen Johnson Photography on July 21, 2018. The show has been extended through August 2019. We have had many visitors come by the gallery since the opening. Many have then joined workshops and certainly helped build community. Please come see the show. Pass the word.
Seeking Good Venues for Life Form
We are seeking good venues to show this work. The Life Form Series is now available for museum and gallery exhibition after August 2019.

The Studio, Scholarships and Mentoring
As part of our ongoing commitment to photographic education, there is one student scholarship spot in many of our classes. Please pass the word along.
For discounted time studying with Steve, keep in mind our Mentoring Program.
With all of our busy schedules and limited budgets, destination workshops or classes become a challenge, but many of you still have questions you need answered, or feedback on some new work. We want to remind you of our Virtual Online Consulting Program. This service allows all of you out there around the globe to consult online live with Steve on technical, aesthetic and workflow issues using Skype and your webcam.
Our Essays and Tutorials from the past couple of years can now be found on our Newsletter Archive and some on Google Blogger.
We hope you can come by the gallery and see the original prints in the new Life Form Gallery and its new Life Form Portfolio, the Exquisite Earth exhibition with its accompanying very special Exquisite Earth Portfolio 1. We invite you to join us on a workshop, rent lab space, or just say hello and let us know what you are up to photographically and what you might like to see us offer. We value your input.
Print Mentor Program
Many of my mentoring students have wanted help with their printing, often to make sure they can produce a specific print. Consequently, I am starting a Print Mentoring Program that sets up a 2 hour time slot and the production of a finished print, all with the tutorial video of how we did it together. Prints can be up to 16x20 and on either Hahnemühle Museum Etching or Photo Rag Pearl paper. Fee is $500. Email for more information and to set up times.
