Fine Art Digital Printing Hands-on in Studio

October 22-25 2022

Mono Lake in Autumn

October 13-16, 2022

Welcome to the September 2022 Edition of the Stephen Johnson Photography Newsletter.

Space, near the sea, beyond the earth, and deep into the cosmos have all been drifting through my mind. The vastness of the Paciific Ocean, the new views of Jupiter from the Webb Telescope, and wide open Western America all call me to adventure. Meanwhile a creature of our sea washed up lifeless on our shores.

Big News! I’m offering my first return to in-studio Fine Art Printing class at Stephen Johnson Photography, with Covid-19 precautions in place.

— Steve

This month's View From Here column explores space photographs, local visions and ongoing encounters. I am offering my first in-studio workshop since Covid began wit my Fine Art Digital Printing class at Stephen Johnson Photography October 22-25, 2022. This is a masked workshop with vaccination required. Other workshops continue with my return to Mono Lake in October for the Mono Lake in Autumn Workshop October 13-16, 2022. Death Valley in January and Yosemite in Winter during February have also been added to start 2023.

As I mentioned in the last few Newsletters, a few big framed original finished prints have become available. My most recent print set is Many Views: Twenty Photographs, emerging from 18 months of work during very challenging pandemic times, is available for order.

I hope you find the column interesting and will consider sending me some comments. As these Newsletters can cover many subjects, let me know of topics you would like to see addressed.

Workshops are currently balanced between virtual classes and field workshops. All workshops currently scheduled are subject to necessary corona virus spread prevention logistics.

An Artemis abort consulation: Space Shuttle Columbia (STS75) launch February 22, 1996. Taken from the Vertical Assembly Building. Kennedy Space Center. Kodak DCS 460c

Columbia flew nine more missions before it was lost in 2003 during reentry brake-up (STS107). The crew and spacecraft’s loss was likely due to insulation foam breaking a wing tile during launch. Lost were Rick Husband, commander; Michael Anderson, payload commander; David Brown, mission specialist; Kalpana Chawla, mission specialist; Laurel Clark, mission specialist; William McCool, pilot; and Ilan Ramon, payload specialist.

I’m offering an 11x14 inch print of this photograph for $195, matted to 16x20 inch board. This print at this price is offered through September 31. I'll be taking orders until then, and shipping them out by October 15.

Virtual Classes

During the virus, I naturally shifted most of my education programs to online experiences. This was frustrating and rewarding. The virtual experiences certainly stretched out my geographical reach. I have been very pleased by our Virtual Classes Program.

My 2022 and now 2023 Workshop Schedule continues to evolve to accommodate the virus precautions and cautious options for gathering indoors. Now that the vaccine is so available it is a prerequisite for any in-person class.

I remain committed to offering great courses whether in person or virtually. See what satisfying experiences students have had on my Workshops by exploring Workshop Testimonials

Other Worldly is the name I’ve given to the two current exhibitions, 50 Years of Space Photography Exhibit and Life Form. Now that we are open for visits by appointment (socially distanced, masked and limited to two people) please set up a time to come by. I hope to be able to open the galleries to general visitation in the not too distant future so you can see what is on display at Stephen Johnson Photography.

THE VIEW FROM HERE
by Stephen Johnson

Homeland, Sea and Space

Up the Sonoma and Mendocino Coasts, drives to the Great Central Valley and my homeland of the San Joaquin, numerous drives down the sacred San Mateo Coast, it is good to be moving about. I’m doing more and more of my computer work from the van with an iPhone hotspot.

It’s cool to be thinking though this newsletter with the open sea as my view and a vulture sweeping by only a few feet away.

There’s magic in a bird shadow speeding across the trail in front of you, Magic in the constant sparkle and dance of the sea, magic in the air rustling through the brush. The Earth is natural magic, all around us, giving us beauty, sustenance and life itself. I am often reminded what a privilege it is to be alive to see and witness so much wonder.

Current human-made darkness often intrudes, but the natural beauty is eternal.

Witnessing our Space Program

Columbia Space Shuttle (STS-75) at Launch. 1996.

Got up early for the Artemis Moon Launch this morning (8/29/22), putting me into a Space state of mind. Disappointed by the delay, my mind drifted to my experiences at the Kennedy Space Center, watching a Space Shuttle launch and landing, and being on top of Pad 39B the night before lift off. As I've been working on expanding my galleries of photos, the treasure trove of my shuttle work took me right back to those experiences.

Small Natural Moments

Barn Swallow chicks with quick parental feeding fly in. Pacifica, CA. 2022.Canon R5. EF100-400mm lens.

For the second year in a row, barn swallows have nested in the alcoves around my studio at the Pacifica Center for the Arts. This year they built a new nest right next to my studio door.

It was wonderful watching them. The chicks went from silent staring, to very active chirps, to hungry enthusiasm as a parent flew in with food. The parents moved so fast it was very hard to react and make a photograph before they were gone. I just kept trying.

Another Cetacean Tragedy

Ventral Pleats and Baleen. Beached Humpback Whale Fran. Half Moon Bay, CA. 2022. Canon R5. EF100-400mm lens.

I had a very emotional visit to the remains of what turns out to be a famous whale. Fran was a 17 year old, 49 foot, female Humpback Whale known to the scientific community. A sighting in June 2022 observed her with a calf.

Even in her death, there was still beauty evident. But after her autopsy, the scene was grotesque. Apparently she was hit by a body breaking ship strike.

I had to pay my respects, I had to reach out and touch her. I will be looking through my fluke photos to see if I might have met her before.

Of course, the more I learn about Fran, the more tragic her death clearly is. The details in the SFGate article brought tears.

From SFGate: In the database we built, we have 70,000 whales and I recognized her immediately," Ted Cheeseman, who runs Happywhale, a citizen science project that identifies the world's whales, told SFGATE. "Ship strikes are tragic. This is the most beautiful animal in the world, being killed literally as road kill. It’s such a waste. Quite honestly, I’m both sad and mad."

SFGate Article on Fran

Whale remains on the Beach beneath luxury resort. Half Moon Bay, CA 2022.

Of course, Fran’s death was likely a ship strike carrying goods like this very computer I’m typing on at the moment. To large sea life, these massive cargo ships are like random deadly attacks. Even short of impact, the noise we put into the sea great disrupts sonic evolutions and adaptations that developed over millions of years. Whales and dolphins can become greatly confused by ship sounds, sonar, underwater low frequency submarine signals. They likely loose track of what they are, where family memebers are and loose the very community they clearly have that impresses us so much. Without intending to, we have invaded their sonic world and severely disrupted it.

The Studio, Scholarships, Mentoring and Tutorials

As part of our ongoing commitment to photographic education, there is one student scholarship spot in many of our classes. Please pass the word along.

For discounted time studying with Steve, keep in mind our Mentoring Program.

With all of our busy schedules and limited budgets, destination workshops or classes become a challenge, but many of you still have questions you need answered, or feedback on some new work. We want to remind you of our Virtual Online Consulting Program. This service allows all of you out there around the globe to consult online live with Steve on technical, aesthetic and workflow issues using Skype and your webcam.

Our Essays and Tutorials from the past couple of years can now be found on our Newsletter Archive and some on my neglected Blog.

We hope you can come by the gallery after the virus and see the original prints in the new Life Form Gallery and its new Life Form Portfolio, the Exquisite Earth exhibition with its accompanying very special Exquisite Earth Portfolio 1. We invite you to join us on a workshop, rent lab space, or just say hello and let us know what you are up to photographically and what you might like to see us offer. We value your input.

Print Mentor Program

Many of my mentoring students have wanted help with their printing, often to make sure they can produce a specific print. Consequently, I am starting a Print Mentoring Program that sets up a 2 hour time slot and the production of a finished print, all with the tutorial video of how we did it together. Prints can be up to 16x20 and on either Hahnemühle Museum Etching or Photo Rag Pearl paper. Fee is $500. Email for more information and to set up times.
